It is a measurement of local atmospheric pressure. It is a vertical glass tube covered with a nozzle. The tube is completely filled with mercury and the reverse is open. The glass tube contains the indexes in mm. By this, the height of the mercury can be measured.

To measure atmospheric pressure, the glass tube containing the mercury is placed in the vessel containing the mercury. In doing so, the tube’s mercury rises to a height of about 760mm. The area above the mercury in the glass tube is the vacuum. If atmospheric pressure does not exert pressure on the mercury in the vessel, the level of mercury in the glass vessel decreases to the level of the mercury in the vessel.

If it were to occur as shown in the figure, atmospheric pressure would bear the weight of a 760mm mercury. Despite increasing the length of the glass tube, the mercury stays in the tube only to a height of 760mm. Therefore,
